Everyone is Welcome at First Presbyterian Church

Lesbians, gay men, bisexual people, transgendered people, and those who are questioning their sexuality or sexual identity are all welcome in the congregation at First Presbyterian Church. Often abbreviated as LGBTQ, this is not a formal group within the church, by their own choosing. Each person in our congregation is an integral part of it, and receives the support of all the members and friends.

We who are LGBTQ and those who are supporters are quite aware that there are people in the community who are not supportive, and others who may be questioning, but are not in supportive environments. The congregation, as a member of Presbyterian Welcome, is in alliance with other Presbyterian congregations and other Christians througout the world who work for a world in which sexuality and sexual identity no longer pose a barrier to anyone's full acceptance as a member of the church or as a servant of God.

First Church Supports the Presbyterian Welcome (Parity) Annual Retreat for aspiring Presbyterian seminary students! In addition to its regular support of the programs at Presbyterian Welcome, the Session has included in the church's 2014 budget a scholarship for this annual retreat. LGBTQ candidates for ordination from all over the United States are invited to New York City each summer to meet each other, hear and tell the stories of their journeys, and to receive support on their path toward ordination. First Presbyterian Brooklyn is proud to support this retreat by underwriting the cost for an individual to attend who might not otherwise afford this opportunity.

Questions?

If you are questioning whether you can be an LGBT person and still be a Christian, we invite you to watch this video, in which all the Biblical sources that are often used to condemn homosexuality are addressed. If you have further questions, we invite you to visit us at First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, visit the Presbyterian Welcome website, or to e-mail the Church.

Pride Month at First Presbyterian

During the month of June each year the congregation learns about and participates in the celebration of the contributions that lesbians, gay men, transgendered people and bisexual people have made to civilization over the ages. It all culminates in a dinner the evening before Pride Day and then a celebration during worship on Pride Day itself.
